Celebrating Teachers’ Day:
Honouring Those Who Shape the Future
There are few professions that influence generations the way teaching does. Teachers inspire curiosity, instil discipline, nurture confidence and open doors that many may never have dared to enter on their own. They are mentors, role models and sometimes the quiet cheerleaders who help shape futures from the back of a classroom.

How Teachers’ Day began
and why we still celebrate it
The idea of dedicating a day to educators isn’t new. Around the world, Teachers’ Day is observed on different dates. In Singapore, Teachers’ Day is celebrated on the first Friday of September. This local tradition has been in place since 1960, established to honour educators for their service to the nation. The Ministry of Education officially designates the day as a school holiday, a small but meaningful recognition of how vital teachers are to society.
TODAY, WHO IS
A NURSE?
Globally, World Teachers’ Day is observed on 5 October, as declared by UNESCO in 1994, commemorating the adoption of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. It was the first international standard that acknowledged the rights and responsibilities of teachers worldwide.

TODAY, WHO IS
A NURSE?
A teacher is anyone who helps someone else learn, and by that definition, the word stretches far beyond school classrooms. Today, teachers can be found in preschools, primary and secondary schools, junior colleges and polytechnics. They also thrive in special education centres, adult learning environments, enrichment and language schools, tuition centres and digital platforms. Singapore is home to more than 33,000 educators across these diverse institutions.
TODAY, WHO IS
A NURSE?
Beyond academics, teachers nurture students’ social, emotional and moral growth. Whether they’re introducing toddlers to phonics or guiding teenagers through calculus, teachers are doing the quiet, steady work of building society from the inside out.

Teachers who changed lives
and left a legacy behind
Many great minds throughout history have left a legacy not just through their accomplishments, but through their teaching. Confucius was one of the earliest known educators, whose philosophical teachings continue to influence Eastern thought. Maria Montessori revolutionised early childhood education with her child-centred, hands-on learning approach. Anne Sullivan, best known as Helen Keller’s teacher, proved that with persistence and compassion, even the seemingly impossible can be achieved.
And closer to home, educators like Chan Kim Boon, who translated classical Chinese texts into Baba Malay, made knowledge more accessible to the local community and contributed significantly to Singapore’s educational history.
