A BRIEF HISTORY OF
NURSES DAY
The modern celebration of Nurses’ Day began in 1965, with 12 May chosen to honour the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
In Singapore, however, Nurses’ Day is commemorated on 1 August. This date marks the day in 1959 when local nurses were first officially trained and registered. It not only honours tradition but also reflects the ongoing evolution of nursing as a highly respected and skilled profession.
what it means to be
A NURSE today
While we often think of nurses working in hospitals, the role has grown to include many more settings. Today, you’ll find nurses in general and specialist clinics, community health teams, palliative care, elderly homes and home-based care. There are also nurses in recovery and rehabilitation centres, occupational health departments and veterinary care, supporting not just humans but also our beloved pets.
No matter the environment, nurses bring comfort, stability and care in moments of vulnerability.

singapore's
nursing workforce
Singapore is home to over 42,000 registered nurses, a number that continues to grow.
Globally, nurses represent the largest part of the healthcare workforce, with over 29 million nurses working across various healthcare systems, according to the World Health Organization. Their presence is not only widespread, but essential.
trailblazing
nursing legends
Throughout history, nurses have shaped not just medicine but society itself.
Florence Nightingale is still revered today for transforming hospital sanitation and nursing education. Mary Seacole, a pioneering nurse of Jamaican-British heritage, cared for soldiers during the Crimean War despite facing racial prejudice. Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross, while Virginia Henderson is remembered for defining nursing in her words as helping people gain independence in their health journeys.
These women, among many others, remind us that nursing is both science and art.
❝ Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. ❞
